How Cezi Works: Traditional Methods and Examples
The first volume of the electronic Cezi Midie lists ten ways of approaching a character. Some concern the location of added strokes; others concern separating forms or interpreting context. They are a description of a traditional practice, not ten proven rules for predicting events.

The ten methods in plain language
The English labels below are our explanatory translations, followed by the Chinese terms so you can return to the source. They are not presented as a standard scholarly terminology. Read the operation and its limits together.
| Method | What the text describes |
|---|---|
| Adding above · 装头 | Add strokes or a component above the starting form. |
| Extending below · 接脚 | Extend the form at its lower part. |
| Working through the centre · 穿心 | Insert strokes through the middle while treating the original body as intact. |
| Enclosing · 包笼 | Keep a starting form and surround it with further strokes. |
| Separating and analysing · 破解 | Split or select parts of the form; the text distinguishes this from insertion through an intact centre. |
| Adding strokes · 添笔 | Consider a change produced by adding to the form. |
| Removing strokes · 减笔 | Consider a limited removal; the text cautions against removing arbitrarily. |
| Relating heads and feet · 对关 | Describe parts through the tops or bottoms of other characters. |
| Selecting strokes · 摘字 | Select a small part of the written form for an association. |
| Observing context · 观梅 | Bring the situation and surrounding observations into the interpretation. |
Try one visible transformation
Look at 王 → 玉. One added dot distinguishes the two modern forms. 王 (wáng) and 玉 (yù) are also paired under the source's adding strokes discussion. Showing that change is a statement about the displayed forms; assigning it an outcome for a job or relationship would be an additional interpretation, not a fact established by the dot.
A useful exercise records the starting character, the exact change, the resulting form and the reason for making the association. Do not silently switch between simplified, traditional and historical forms to make a reading appear to work.
What to check before using an example
The electronic text includes missing or doubtful characters. We avoid building an example around a glyph that cannot be identified reliably. The original also makes claims about successful divination; quoting a traditional claim would not demonstrate its predictive accuracy.
For closer reading, use the Chinese notes on position, transformation and context. A method name explains how an interpretation is assembled. It does not remove the need to check the character, question and source.
