明 (Míng): Meaning, Modern Form and the Sun-and-Moon Association

明 is pronounced míng. Depending on context, it can concern brightness, clarity or understanding. The modern form contains 日 and 月, which makes the sun-and-moon association an accessible memory aid. That observation alone does not establish the character's earliest form.

Read the whole word

明亮 (míngliàng) concerns brightness, while 明白 (míngbai) concerns understanding or being clear. 明天 (míngtiān) means tomorrow. A translation of the single character must fit the full word and sentence.

The dictionary entry supports these different uses. We do not use a modern component drawing as proof of how all of those meanings developed historically. This page leaves the earliest form unresolved rather than presenting an unverified origin story.

An original question about clarity

Our reflection prompt is: “What do I know clearly, and what still needs checking?” Write one observation and one unanswered question. That exercise comes from the present meaning of clarity; it does not show that a character can decide what will happen next.
