Cezi and Chinese Character Etymology: What Is the Difference?
A modern character diagram tells you what you can see in a written form. Etymology asks how that form and its use developed over time. Cezi interprets forms and associations in relation to a question. These explanations can sit beside one another, but they answer different questions.

Four kinds of explanation
| Layer | What it can explain |
|---|---|
| Modern form | The visible components of the form being shown. |
| Dictionary meaning | A pronunciation and a meaning supported in a particular usage. |
| Historical etymology | Development supported by dated forms, texts and research. |
| Interpretation or reflection | A traditional or newly created association, labelled as such. |
Why a memorable story is not the whole history
With 明 (míng), 日 and 月 are visible in the modern form. “Sun and moon” can be a useful memory association for brightness. This page does not infer the earliest written form from that observation. The dictionary supports senses such as brightness and clarity; a claim about ancient forms needs different evidence.
With 休 (xiū), a diagram can show the person component beside 木, while the dictionary supports the common meaning of rest. Turning that image into “What support would help me pause?” is our own reflection. It should not be presented as a dictionary definition or attributed to Cezi Midie.
How to assess a character explanation
Ask what form is being shown, what question the author is answering and what kind of source supports the statement. A dictionary entry is useful for meanings; a manuscript image or specialist study may be needed for a historical claim. An attractive diagram alone cannot settle either.
When evidence is uncertain, say so and narrow the claim. You can still enjoy an original character story without making it a statement about ancient origins or a prediction about your life.
